Juxtaposition Earrings

Savannah, GA — October 2025

During my Intro to Jewelry class at SCAD, I created my first pair of earrings using soldering, sawing, planishing, and mixed metals. The piece combines nickel silver, copper, and brass, each chosen for their distinct colors and textural possibilities. I employed flush soldering to create seamless joins, forming to shape the components into graceful curves, and planishing to refine the surface and introduce subtle, hand-worked character.

The design balances the cool tone of nickel silver with the warm hues of copper and brass, allowing each metal to read clearly while functioning as a unified composition. Sawing established the initial silhouettes, forming introduced volume and movement, and planishing left small, rhythmic marks that catch light and emphasize the handcrafted process. The earrings reflect both technical learning and an early exploration of contrast, weight, and finish in mixed-metal jewelry.
