Still Life

Savannah, GA — 2024

During my freshman year at SCAD, I was placed into a drawing class that focused on shadows, depth, light, and still life. This final piece for the class was created using charcoal and measures 36 inches by 70 inches. The composition emphasizes careful observation and control of values to render form and space convincingly. Highlights and subtle midtones create a sense of volume while deep, layered blacks define the strongest shadows and anchor the composition. Textural contrasts—soft transitions around curved surfaces and more abrupt edges at object intersections—reinforce the illusion of depth. Attention to proportion, cast shadows, and reflected light demonstrates a disciplined approach to drawing fundamentals and an ability to translate visual information into a large-scale, cohesive work.
